Can CBD help with menopause symptoms?
This question has been asked a few times, so we hope this blog will be insightful. We will refer to data from the US, as the data within the UK on this topic is currently limited. The recent US data suggests more and more women going through menopause are turning to CBD for the benefits it provides in alleviating their menopausal symptoms.
When it comes to the menopause, many women do not realise they are entering the perimenopause stage, however, if they were able to know sooner and proactively prepare for the onset of the menopause, this would greatly help aid the transition and improve your wellbeing. Recent surveys have suggested that one of the top reasons for women choosing to use CBD is for menopause as well as to aid with pain management related to menstrual cramps.
One of the main ways in which CBD can help with menopause symptoms is the way it interacts with your cannabinoid receptors. This brings us to the question…
How do cannabinoid receptors work?
Our bodies also produce cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids) that interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) refers to a collection of cell receptors called cannabinoid receptors, which are present in the brain, organs and other tissues throughout the body. The endocannabinoid system works by interacting with chemical messengers, including CBD.
Menopause appears to disturb the endocannabinoid system, there are cannabinoid receptors throughout the female reproductive system, so it is possible that CBD oil could reduce some of the symptoms related to menopause.
Let’s talk Oestrogen…
The female hormone, oestrogen is responsible for managing the millions of immature eggs found in ovaries. From puberty, women’s bodies are pumped full of oestrogen every time an egg matures (approximately once a month). However, over the years the supply of eggs diminishes. Once all the eggs deplete, periods stop and the surge of oestrogen reduces significantly, triggering menopause.
However, prior to the onset of menopause there is a period called the perimenopause, during this time period, the oestrogen levels fluctuate unpredictably. The loss of oestrogen creates an imbalance of other hormones, which creates a ripple effect and resulting in imbalance throughout the body.
Directed by these hormones, brain neurochemistry changes and the body increases production of inflammatory molecules. From brain function, to fat accumulation, to bone reabsorption, menopause changes the inner workings of the female bodies and each woman’s experience of menopause will be unique.
What menopause symptoms can CBD treat?
Recent research in the US has suggested that CBD could be helpful for the following areas where symptoms related to menopause can occur:
Aches & Joint Pain
It is important to reduce inflammation in your body during menopause and Cannabidiol has proven anti-inflammatory properties. In non-human trials, CBD is anti-arthritic and protects joints against inflammatory damage.
Weight Gain & Diabetes
Studies have advocated that adults who use cannabis products have lower insulin levels and smaller waist circumferences. Cannabidiol could contribute by switching on genes for healthy metabolism. CBD also helps buffer the activity of natural endocannabinoids.
If you are emotionally distressed, you should seek the support of a medical professional. They might suggest therapeutic or pharmaceutical solutions. If you choose to supplement with CBD products, it is useful to know that CBD could activate serotonin receptors similar to the anti-anxiety drug buspirone.
Hot Flashes & Night Sweats
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and antidepressants can help relieve hot flashes. Although there are not currently any studies that have specifically tested CBD for treating hot flashes, its effect on the body’s serotonin system could be one reason why some women are using CBD to treat this symptom.
People of varying age groups and genders report that CBD products help them get restorative sleep. Whether or not CBD could help you get a better night’s sleep depends on the source of your disruptions. CBD’s influence on neurochemistry and anxiety could help improve sleep for women experiencing insomnia or disruptive night sweats.
Bone Density Loss
A low bone density can increase the chance of fractures or bruises, so it is an important symptom to treat. Research has suggested that CBD interacts with a cannabinoid receptor that may play a role in bone density loss. CBD may therefore be able to reduce the rate of bone density loss that can occur during menopause.
