Can CBD help with hay fever?
For anybody who is a Hay fever sufferer (like me) will tell you that it can completely ruin the best part of the summer season! According to the NHS, It's estimated that there are more than 10 million people who suffer from fever in England and it effects all age groups.
Regardless of the huge advancements in modern medicine, there is currently no cure. Antihistamines are not always effective and the NHS's advice to stay indoors is not the most practical solution for the majority of us.
There is some hope though! There is some research that suggests CBD could help provide relief and that a cannabis-based supplement could work as a treatment.
What exactly is hay fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction that is triggered when pollen comes into contact with your mouth, nose, eyes and throat. This is why we suffer most in summer when plants and flowers are at their most active.
We suffer allergic reactions because our bodies mistakenly identify pollen as a dangerous threat. In an attempt to nullify this threat, our endocannabinoid system encourages antibodies to attach themselves to mast cells.
The antibodies are designed to cause the mast cells to release histamine. Histamine is the chemical responsible for inflammatory responses such as a runny nose, itching and sneezing.
This is why antihistamines can be so effective in alleviating the symptoms of hay fever.
How is cannabis thought to help?
It is suggested that CBD and cannabis are effective in treating hay fever for two reasons:
- CBD has been proven to be an effective anti-inflammatory and works with your endocannabinoid system to help your body achieve homeostasis.
- CBD can help discourage histamine from being released.
A study conducted in 2015 concluded that CB1 receptors could mediate the hypersensitivity of the immune system. The researchers found that activation of CB1 receptors were found to reduce the express rate of mast cells, which in turn could be used to lower histamine levels.
This research was supported by a study on guinea pigs. During the investigation, the guinea pigs were administered with raw egg whites which led to a trigger in mast cells and an increase in histamines. CBD was able to reduce airway obstruction and relax muscle tone, suggesting it to be a beneficial treatment for obstructive airway disorders.
Could CBD eventually be used to treat hay fever?
Yes, there is a real possibility that CBD could be used as a verified holistic treatment in combating hay fever symptoms.
Prescribed medicines will always be the first recommendation of health care professionals. However, the number of people trying natural remedies is growing.
As the amount of medical research into the benefits of CBD increases so does its apparent benefits.
